How To Make Your Own Hyaluronic Acid Serum With Just Two Ingredients!

Hello dear readers! Today I'm going to tell you how to make your very own 1% hyaluronic acid serum. This formula yields 30mls of serum. It will save you tons of money! So what exactly is this hyaluronic acid? I'm going to tell you just that; and why it is such a staple ingredient in skin care products.

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccaride found throughout our body cells. It is a powerful moisture binding agent that regulates moisture levels in the skin, and provides cushion for our joints and eyes. It holds 1000 times its weight in water. In addition, it is responsible for skin elasticity, fullness, and suppleness.  It is present in large amounts during our youth. Unfortunetly it slowly declines as we age. This is one reason aging skin can be dry. Using a topical HA serum twice daily can dramatically improve skin texture and moisture levels. This ingredient is ideal for oily and sensitive types. It is very gentle. Now a note about terminology.

There are two different forms of this acid. Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate. Here is where things get confusing. The beauty industry markets both of these as hyaluronic acid. The difference is, Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. It has a much smaller molecular structure and it is more stable. The smaller molecular structure allows the ingredient to penetrate the skin. Therefore, when you buy this ingredient to make this lovely serum, look for the INCI name Sodium Hyaluronate. I get mine at Lotioncrafter.com. Their site names the ingredient as Hyaluronic Acid as they all do; but if you scroll down you will see that its INCI name is Sodium Hyaluronate. There are several different weights available. You want either the ultra low molecular weight or the super low molecular weight. I have used both and cannot tell a difference. Now, moving on to what you will need.

First of all, these ingredients have to be measured in grams. You will need a scale. They are not very expensive. I got mine on ebay for 10 dollars. Just make sure it measures in grams. Here are a couple of photos of the one I use.
Secondly you will need something to measure the ingredients in. Medicine cups work well. However, they require cleaning and sterilization.  I use solo disposable shot glasses. They cost between 1 and 2 dollars for 20 depending on the season. I highly recommend using these as they do not need to be sterilized; and you can just throw them away when you are done using them.
The third thing you will need is the Hyaluronic Acid or Sodium Hyaluronate. I use either the super low molecular weight or the ultra low molecular weight from lotion crafters. Either one will do. The one I use is pictured below.
The last two things you will need is Distilled water (87 cents a gallon at walmart) and a clean sterilized container to store your serum in. I use a small mason jar. (To sterilize your equipment simply rinse with alcohol then distilled water to get rid of the alcohol smell. )Do not touch the inside of it! Now that you have your ingredients and supplies assembled, I'm going to tell you how to put them together.

Start with a clean dry solo cup. No need to sterilize these if you are taking them straight from the package.  if using a medicine cup wipe with alcohol then allow to dry. HA must be measured in a dry cup! The solo cup weights 2.7 grams. You want 0.3 grams of the HA. The weight of the cup must be added to 0.3. so our total weight of HA is going to be 3. Next measure your water.

The distilled water needs to be measured in a clean sterile cup as well. The water itself is sterile. Once again the weight of the cup will need to be considered. We need 29.7 grams of distilled water. Add 2.7 to that and our total weight of water will be 32.4 Now we are going to combine both ingredients.

First pour the water into your sterilized mason jar or any sterilized container with a good closure will do. Next pour your HA into the water then put the lid on and shake it like crazy for about a minute. Store in the refrigerator. Its going to look clumpy and weird for a couple of hours. It will keep for approximately two weeks. It does not have a preservative; so if it turns in color or develops and odor discard and make a fresh batch. Hope you all enjoy it! I really hope these instructions were not too confusing. Comment with your any feedback. I would love to hear from you!
